Noah Von Sterne is no stranger to setbacks, nor toil, nor catastrophe. An inhospitable planet located at the very edge of Lyran space is no one’s idea of a vacation home, but he and his family are a bright bunch, and for decades Nonorel V has functioned as a hub for interstellar shipping and manufacturing. The monotony is broken, however, when a massive explosion of unknown origin nearly levels the Von Sternes’ compound, leaving few facilities intact and even fewer inhabitants alive to witness the destruction. Forced to wade through the body-strewn wreckage of his home, Noah refuses to give up just yet.

Hannah plays both her roles as caring mother and skilled technician expertly. When her and Noah's daughters perished in a tragic accident early on in their colonization of Nonorel V, she helped him create robotic replicas of them. Each is complete with artificial intelligence and a programmed personality identical to that of her predecessor.
Hannah is a confident and ambitious woman; little can stand between her and her goals.

Just like his beautiful wife, Noah is a highly intelligent and industrious individual. Ever absorbed with his work and livelihood, he struggles to reconcile the traumas of a troubled past.

Meticulous, analytical, and at times highly sarcastic, Noah is a bit socially inept and tends to conceal the true depth of his feelings. A less magnanimous narrator might describe him to be "as cynical as he is emotionally constipated."
